The calls that come in after hours
Roughly the same handful of problems, over and over, at the least convenient hours:
- The door pulled shut with the keys on the other side of it.
- A key that snapped off in the cylinder, usually one that had been stiffening for weeks.
- A lock forced in an attempt on the property, leaving it open to the street.
- A shop shutter that will not lift at seven in the morning, with a delivery due.
- A child or an older relative shut inside a room or a flat.
- A communal garage door stuck open, leaving the whole building accessible.
What actually happens when we arrive
We look at the door before we touch it. At two in the morning there are two things that matter, and they pull in opposite directions: getting you inside quickly, and not leaving you with a bigger bill in the morning because something got forced that did not need to be. If the cylinder can be saved, it gets saved. If it was already destroyed by whoever tried the door before us, you will hear that before we start, along with what the replacement costs.
You approve a fixed price first. If the job turns out to be something other than what it looked like from the doorstep — and occasionally it does — we stop and tell you rather than carrying on and explaining afterwards.
Getting to you, which in Elche is half the job
This municipality is not compact. The old town around the basilica is largely pedestrian, so the van stops at the edge and the tools come the rest of the way on foot; tell us the nearest street a vehicle can actually reach and you save everyone ten minutes. The Vinalopó splits the city, and if you are in El Pla the crossing matters. The coast at Arenales del Sol is fifteen kilometres out. The airport sits inside the municipal boundary between El Altet and Torrellano. And the farming partidas of the Camp d'Elx frequently have no usable street number at all.
None of that stops us coming. It does mean that a dropped map pin is worth more than a postcode, and that an honest arrival estimate depends on which of those places you are standing in.
Before you ring: if you suspect the door has been forced and someone may still be inside, call 112 first and wait outside the property. The lock can wait ten minutes; that cannot.
The honest version of “24 hours”
The line is answered at any hour and emergency work is carried out at any hour. Planned work is not. Changing a cylinder because you have decided to upgrade it, fitting extra security, sorting a safe or a commercial shutter — those are booked into normal working hours, when the right parts are on board and you are not paying a night rate for something that would happily have waited until Tuesday. Saying that costs us the occasional midnight job and we would rather keep the customer.

What people ask before they call
Is it dearer at three in the morning than at three in the afternoon?
Yes, and anyone who tells you otherwise is building it into the day rate instead. Nights, weekends and Spanish public holidays carry a higher call-out than normal hours. You hear the figure on the phone, before anybody sets off, so you can decide whether the problem genuinely cannot wait until morning. Plenty of them can, and we will say so.
What counts as an emergency and what does not?
An emergency is a door you cannot get through, a door that will not shut, or a lock that has been forced and left a property open. Those we come out to at any hour. A cylinder you want upgrading, a shutter that is getting stiff, a safe you would like looking at — those are jobs, not emergencies, and they are cheaper and better done in normal hours with the right parts on the van.
Do you come out during the August fiestas?
We do, and it is worth knowing what you are dealing with. On the night of the Nit de l'Albà the city centre streets are closed and the lights go out for the Palmera de la Virgen. Between the 7th and the 15th the centre is packed. We will still reach you, but tell us which side of the closures you are on and expect the approach to take longer than the distance suggests.
Nobody can find my house — it is out in the campo with no number.
Very common out in the partidas around Matola, Valverde and Las Bayas. Send us a dropped pin on WhatsApp rather than trying to describe the turning. It removes the guesswork completely, and it is the single thing that most reduces how long you stand outside.
Someone has forced my door. What should I do before you get here?
If you think anyone might still be inside, call 112 and wait outside — that comes before the lock. Otherwise, report it to the Policía Nacional or Guardia Civil and get the denuncia started, because most Spanish home policies want that reference before they will pay for anything. Then let us make the door secure. We will itemise the damage and what we fitted on the factura so the claim is straightforward.
How long will you be?
We give you a realistic figure for your address when you ring, and we would rather say forty minutes and be early than say fifteen and leave you watching the street. It depends on where you are — the difference between the centre and La Marina is real — and on what is already in hand.
